The government will raise the fine for using a mobile phone while driving to NOK 7450. This represents an increase of 49 percent from the current level.

According to the magazine automotive Motor, this follows from the consultation information that the government sent out on general adjustments to the rates of fines.

Currently, red light penalties are higher than those for using a mobile phone while driving. The red light penalty is NOK 6800. The fine for using a mobile phone while driving is NOK 5000.

In the consultation note, the government indicates that in its view the ban on the use of mobile phones in cars is not sufficiently respected as justification for the proposal.

- There are reasons to believe that the prohibition on use is not satisfactorily complied with. However, it is difficult to determine exactly without applying a sufficiently high penalty.
