In a resolution adopted on Tuesday, the parliament condemns Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine in the strongest terms. He demands that the Kremlin end all military activities in this country. It also condemns the role of the Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenka in the attack.
MEPs categorically reject Russia's "rhetoric suggesting the use of weapons of mass destruction," while reminding Russia of its international obligations and warning of the dangers of a nuclear escalation of the conflict.
They are also calling on the European Commission and EU countries to provide assistance further emergency humanitarian assistance to Ukraine in cooperation with UN humanitarian agencies and other international partner organizations.
The text was approved by 637 votes to 13 against and 26 abstentions.
Working for the status of candidate for the EU for Ukraine
The resolution calls on the EU institutions to take action on item granting this country EU candidate status. As the text says, any such procedure should comply with art. 49 of the Treaty on European Union and based on merit. In the meantime, the EU should continue its efforts to integrate Ukraine into the EU's single market in line with the current EU-Ukraine Association Agreement.
Stronger sanctions against Russia
Welcoming the swift adoption of EU sanctions, MEPs expect broader restrictive measures to strategically weaken the Russian economy and industrial base.
In particular, imports of key Russian exports such as oil and gas should be restricted gas. New EU investments in Russia and new Russian investments in the EU should be banned. All Russian banks should be blocked from the European system financial, and Russia should be blocked in the SWIFT system.
A number of sanctions, including the SWIFT ban, should be extended to Belarus. This is based on her direct endorsement of Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Supply of weapons and protection of refugees
In addition, the text calls on EU countries to deliver faster Defends Ukraine defense, in accordance with Art. 51 of the United Nations Charter, which allows for individual and collective self-defense. He also advocates closer cooperation EU intelligence with Ukraine regarding ongoing aggression.
Parliament also welcomes the EU's commitment to activate its Directive on protection temporary measure to ensure that all Ukrainians fleeing the war have immediate access to protection. Responsibility for welcoming refugees arriving at the EU's external borders should be shared equally between EU countries.
No more "golden visas" for wealthy Russians
MEPs demand the swift adoption of sanctions against those responsible for high-level corruption in Russia and Belarus. This should also apply to oligarchs and officials close to the leaders of these countries.
EU and allied countries where they reside as part of the programs investment visas (so-called "golden visas") should review all beneficiaries of this residence status. As a result, revoke these visas assigned to Russian high-income individuals and their families, particularly those associated with sanctioned individuals and companies, the text says.
