Finland will become the 31st member of NATO on Tuesday (April 4, 2023). This will happen immediately before the two-day meeting of foreign ministers of the Alliance member states. Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed Finland's impending accession, saying "It will be a good day for Finland's security, for the security of the Nordic countries and for NATO as a whole." After Finland's accession to the alliance, the length of the border between NATO and Russia will double.

The Parliament of Turkey ratified Finland's application to join NATO. It is the last country of the North Atlantic Alliance that has agreed to admit Finland to NATO. Türkiye and Hungary, however, have still not ratified Sweden's application.

At the meeting, the allies will deal with the illegal one Russia's war with Ukraine. They are also expected to agree to start work on developing a multi-year support program. They will also discuss threats and challenges from the South, the importance of increased defense investments, and China's growing alliances with Russia. NATO partners from the Indo-Pacific region and the European Union will also join the discussion on the global consequences of Russia's war with Ukraine.
