– In the context of an extraordinary period in capacity markets, it was important that the government carefully reviewed the advantages and disadvantages of current pricing rules in different parts of the energy market. That's why in February this year we agreed price of electricity, says Aasland.

The Electricity Price Commission (Straumprisutvalet) was established in February 2023. The expert committee is chaired by Managing Director Inge Røinaas Gran at Sintef Energi. The committee's main task was to assess what actions, in the short and long term, could provide electricity consumers with lower and more predictable prices under the EEA Agreement.

We said "no" to new foreign cables

– The government took action in response to the extraordinary price situation. We have established an important energy support program for households and better fixed price contracts for businesses. We have also strengthened our electricity system, said no to new foreign cables and unveiled new tools to secure our energy supplies, giving us greater political control. We will now assess the report of the electricity pricing commission and I look forward to further work, says Aasland.

In the report, the committee assessed the extraordinary situation on energy markets over the past two years and conducted a thorough review of the energy market in Norway. The Commission has finally examined a number of proposals for measures in both the wholesale and retail markets that are expected to contribute to stable and competitive prices.

As we read in the commission's report - "Without sufficient access to energy, competitive prices cannot be achieved. “However, all energy projects have costs, ranging from purely financial costs to natural interventions and other conflicts of interest.”
