Next year, drivers will pay a high "bompenger" fee. The fuel tax and the tax on owning an electric car will also be increased. In our opinion, the government has missed the target, writes NAF.
Tolls they are not a direct part of the state budget, but according to new government estimates, according to NAF, they are increasing dramatically.
The motor insurance fee for electric cars has increased from symbolic to the highest on the market. Meanwhile, for combustion vehicles (gasoline and diesel) they reduce this levy, while electric cars remain in place and end up paying a higher levy. This may make it difficult to switch to electric cars.
Tax benefits for electric cars are gradually decreasing. One of the key benefits was the low motor insurance fee, previously known as the annual fee. From a symbolic amount, it has become a significant contribution over the last two years. In 2023, this fee is the same for both electric and combustion cars. In the draft budget for 2024, the fee for electric vehicles exceeds the fee for combustion vehicles by CZK 337.
According to NAF, this is the wrong path, especially in the context of the switch to electric cars, which is planned to be carried out by over two million drivers in the coming years. Combined with increases in city entry fees and the vehicle weight tax, this is another signal that we are moving away from the carrot and switching to the whip. This is the development that NAF warns against.
Higher fees for "bompenger" next year
Next year there will be a limit road tolls will amount to as much as CZK 22,9 billion, compared to CZK 43,1 billion for investment in road projects. This is a new record in road tolls. This year, road tolls of CZK 15,2 billion are expected. This is also a new record.
More people may have to pay higher bompenger fees next year. Currently, many drivers are struggling with pay rises. We are very critical of the fact that so much of road investments and urban projects are placed on the shoulders of drivers. Local roads are still neglected, we read in NAF information.
Refueling will be more expensive next year when the government increases the fuel tax. At the same time, the motor insurance fee will be slightly reduced. The tax on CO2 emissions will be increased and the road tax on fuel will be slightly reduced. In total, the tax on petrol increases by 15 øre and diesel fuel may become more expensive by around 27 øre per liter due to requirements for increased blending of biofuels.
A toll increase is the last thing Norwegian drivers need. This sends an unfortunate signal and is a clear breach of the government's promises made on the Hurdal platform.
