Both in Viken and across the country, there was a slight increase in road traffic fatalities in 2023.
Most road accident deaths occur in Viken
In 2023 on Norwegian roads 118 people died. This is an increase from 116 in the previous year. Viken death toll fatal accidents road traffic increased from 21 in 2022 to 22 in 2023 - according to preliminary data from the Norwegian Road Administration.
– The largest number occurred in our district fatal accidents. We are concerned that in recent years the number fatalities didn't fall. To find answers and new knowledge, we explore them all Accidents fatal, says Anders Hagerup, section manager at the Norwegian Road Administration.

The most serious accidents are head-on accidents
Head-on collisions still dominate among the most serious accidents accidents on descents. In four cars were involved in accidents in Viken trucks. In one two people died in the accident.
- We observe number increase accidents with two and three fatalities. We had three such accidents in Viken. There haven't been this many accidents with multiple fatalities since 2015, and unfortunately many of these people are young people, says Hagerup.
Many young people died
Accident statistics for the entire country show that the number of fatalities in the 2023 to 25 age group also increased in 44. Last year there were 28 compared to 22 the year before. It is also noticeable decline in numbers elderly people (65+) from 38 to 25 road fatalities last year.
Seven died last year children under 16 years of age, which is an increase compared to all the previous 10 years. Two people died in Viken dzieci aged 9 and 12.
