How should you apply for benefit for the unemployed?

NAV usually inquires about income from the tax authorities.

In the period from January to mid February you must document your income for the previous year by submitting:

  • Annual statement of wages and tax advances (Lønns- og trekkoppgave). You must also provide your salary slip for December, which shows the total wages paid during the year.
  • Annual statement benefits paid to you by NAV

For people with dependents or a maintenance obligation

  • You can only receive child benefit for: children under 18 years of age.
  • If the child is not registered in the population register, his or her birth certificate must be attached. If the child arrived at Norway recently and does not yet have a registration number, you must also attach a document confirming your place of residence.
  • You want to claim child benefit for a child who lives in a country governed by EEA rules and/or the Nordic Convention on social security, you must also provide the child's birth certificate or adoption documents.
