Strike at Ryanair

The announced and scheduled date of the Ryanair strike has struck. It is today, September 28: Belgium, Spain, the Netherlands, Portugal, Italy, but also Germany will conduct a protest action.

The date of the strike has been known for some time

On September 13, a conference was held with the participation of the trade unions, which then announced a strike by the above-mentioned countries. The protest is scheduled for September 28. The reason for this behavior is that all airline employees apply the terms and conditions of employment laws that apply in Ireland. This means that an employee of a German airline is subject to Irish employment law, not German.

Germany announces its joining

The carrier may have been greatly surprised by the sudden decision of German personnel to join the strike. Why? Well, Ryanair this month has already struggled with the German protest. The cockpit and the trade union in Germany staged a 24-hour protest and demanded that working conditions be improved. In fact, the decision was made only the day before the strike, ie on September 27.

Number of canceled flights

When airlines know that a strike has taken place, it is their duty to cancel a specific number of flights, but also to inform passengers about everything. Originally due to the strike, Ryanair was supposed to cancel 190 flights, but this number was reduced to 150. However, it must be remembered that the rather late decision of Germany to join the strike also resulted in the cancellation of several dozen additional starts. According to the Irish airlines, all passengers received relevant information about canceled flights via SMS or e-mail.

Passenger Compensation

Upon cancellation of a flight by the carrier, the passenger may seek compensation. If the canceled flight was up to 1500 km, the passenger may apply for compensation in the amount of EUR 250, if the flight is between 1500 and 3500 km, then the client may receive EUR 400, for flights longer than 3500 km, the airline may pay out EUR 600. Compensation does not apply if the airlines canceled the flight at least 14 days before its date.

A strike is not a reason to pay compensation

Airlines for a long time resisted paying compensation to passengers at the time of the strike. However, in April 2018, the Court of Justice of the European Union ruled that the presence of a strike and a technical defect in the aircraft are inherent in the risk of conducting business as airlines. The Court considers that if the carrier knows about the strike, it can change the network of connections so that it is good for the passenger and does not generate large losses for the airlines.
