In the Land of the Fjords, the legal system provides for help in finding housing for people who are in a difficult situation. Public housing in Norway is provided by NAV (i.e. an institution combining the functions of the employment, social security and social welfare office). On what terms is it granted?
Beneficiaries of communal flats
Norwegian law defines who the already mentioned "persons in difficult situations" are. These include, but are not limited to, people in a poor financial situation. The list also includes disabled people, people in very poor health and with social problems. Interestingly, municipal apartments in Norway can also be obtained thanks to poor knowledge of the Norwegian real estate market.

However, the list does not end there, as social groups such as former prisoners, refugees and those who require assistance from social welfare centers can also count on support in this regard. The catalog of potential Beneficiaries is wide and it is best to be directly oriented at NAV - you may be eligible for support.
Municipal housing in Norway and the rights of tenants
It is worth noting that the rules of communal premises are slightly different than in the case of a standard lease. In this case, greater protection against possible eviction is particularly important.
This does not mean, however, that the entities to which they belong public housing in Norway, remain without protection of their own interests. Typically, adequate protections are included in the lease itself. However, the key issue is to prepare it properly and read it carefully. This will allow us to avoid potential unpleasantness.

What is the procedure for granting a social flat?
The way in which council housing is allocated in Norway varies from municipality to municipality. More detailed information on how to submit an application and how the procedure works is available from NAV or other local authorities. It is worth going to the office even if you are convinced that we are not entitled to this type of premises. The prices for their rental are more attractive than standard market prices, so it is worth taking advantage.
