In early November, Swedish newspapers reported that the Gamestop gaming chain was considering closing its stores in the Scandinavian region. Now the American company has confirmed the closures. Today, this information was confirmed on the Norwegian version of this store's website. For many months, the company has not generated profits from stationary sales - most of its income comes primarily from online sales. Hence the decision to close the stores - the company is constantly looking for savings. What more do we know about this case?

Let's give the floor to the management...

Gamestop president George Sherman of the company clearly confirms the closure of traditional stores. In a special statement, he emphasizes:

“We have started the process of closing our operations in Northern Europe, which includes Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. It will take several months. "

Unfortunately, for many people, this means losing their job. The brand employs about 100 people in Norway alone. Now their jobs are under threat.

Poor sales results…

In August, the company posted its weakest profit in over a decade, with sales of NOK 180 million and a loss of NOK 6,2 million. By then, the brand had significantly reduced its numbers stores in Norway. Ten years ago, Gamestop merged with its sister company Free Record Shop and acquired a total of 65 stores.

The entire network in the world currently consists of just over 5700 stores. Gamestop announces on its Norwegian website that from December 11, employees will no longer issue gift cards, and customers who have already purchased them must exchange them as soon as possible. in addition, the network provides good access to information. Store closing dates will be announced live, but the online store will exist until the last store closes.

In the age of the Internet, are traditional stores still justified?

To sum up. Against the background of this event and modernization, specialists and buyers are asking themselves the question: are stationary stores justified in an era where the Internet network is such an important sphere of our lives? It is difficult to answer this question unequivocally - but we must be aware that the very nature and form of sales are constantly changing and this is the natural sequence of things.
