The trail above Besseggen has been officially recognized as a National Tourist Route. This is the fifth trail in Norway to receive this prestigious status.

Besseggen is now a National Tourist Route

On Saturday, June 17, a ceremony will be held in Gjendesheim to commemorate the awarding of Besseggen National Tourist Route status.

Being a National Tourist Trail involves a number of requirements that must be met. An important goal is to enable a large number of tourists use of the trail, while maintaining natural values ​​and the quality of the experience. Therefore, those who decide to hike an authorized trail can be sure that both their safety and the environment are adequately protected. Mountain rangers, appropriate signage, shelters and good information on site are just some of the benefits actions taken for the purpose ensuring the greatest possible safety. By also ensuring good maintenance of the route of exposed fragments, the negative impact on the environment is minimized.

Minister Eide expresses his appreciation to the Norwegian Mountain Center, the national park administration and the municipality of Vågå for their long-standing efforts in to reduce negative impact on Besseggen and improving safety. Additionally, he praises the Besseggen patrol, organized by Gjendeguiden, for their significant efforts that have contributed to reducing number of situations requiring rescue operations.

There can be a maximum of 15 National Tourist Routes

W There can be a maximum of 15 National Trails in Norway Tourists, each of which is authorized for five years. After this period is necessary again obtaining authorization to maintain status. The National Tourist Trail requires continuous efforts on the part of trail managers to consistently meet safety requirements and respect for nature and landscape. Authorized trails also receive an annual subsidy and are treated as a priority in the program subsidies for National Tourist Trails.

Minister Eide emphasizes that although it is great that so many people want to discover Norwegian nature, it is necessary to preserve natural values ​​and experiences. The Besseggen example proves that this is entirely achievable, provided it is properly managed and managed environmental protection.
