– We must start working today on developing weapons that will protect us against the threats of tomorrow. The new missile will strengthen Norway's defense potential and ability to engage targets at long ranges, and is expected to be combat ready by 2035, Gram says.

Kongsberg Defense and Aerospace developed today's Naval Strike Missile (NSM) and will also play a leading role in the development of the new naval strike missile.

– The development of Norwegian missiles is a success story. The Norwegian defense industry, led by Kongsberg, has exceptional expertise and produces world-class missiles. The project will contribute to the further development of strategically important technological competences, thanks to which we will be able to develop missiles attractive to other NATO countries and close allies in the future, says Gram.

Today's NSM was developed in the early 2011st century and delivered to the Norwegian Armed Forces between 2015 and XNUMX. Currently, the missile is used in the navies of many countries.

The aim of the project is to ensure that in the future Norway will also have a world-leading rocket industry, as we have today. This industry creates hundreds of jobs work in Norway and gives us a strengthened role on the international stage and in cooperation with NATO. The development of the new missile is a joint project of Norway and Germany. The missile is to be used, among others, on Norwegian and German warships.

– Germany is our most important European partner in cooperation in the field of defense equipment and our main and important ally in NATO – says Gram.

The government is now proposing to decide to initiate the first preliminary design phase of the project. Germany also plans to consider a launch decision in the new year. The government will return to the Storting with a recommendation to continue the project once the design phase is complete.

– There is a lot of uncertainty in large and complex development projects in the high-tech industry. It is important for the government to minimize the financial risk of the project. We are therefore planning a process consisting of different phases, with each phase having its own cost framework, and the goal is to have good control over costs in each phase, says Gram.

This missile was previously called Future Naval Strike Missile (FNSM). In further development, it will be called Super Sonic Strike Missile (3SM) Tyrfing.
