Unemployment Benefit in Norway is a form of NAV support for all those who find themselves in a difficult financial situation. Unlike the benefit granted in Poland, NAV also offers the opportunity to help people who work, but their working hours have been reduced.

Unemployment benefit in Norway - for whom?

You can get unemployment benefit in Norway if certain criteria are met. These include the following:

  • Your work time has been reduced by at least half,
  • you had an income of 1,5 G in the last year or in the last 3 years,
  • you are registered as a jobseeker or submit your current employment status to NAV every 14 days,
  • you are actually looking for a job,
  • you have the right to stay legally on the territory of Norway.

A person who is really looking for a job

According to NAV, a person actually looking for employment is an unemployed person who:

  • is able to work,
  • cannot have specific demands as to remuneration,
  • must be able to work anywhere in Norway,
  • must be ready to work both full-time and part-time,
  • actively looking for a job,
  • is available for NAV and has an updated CV in the office database,
  • is able to provide care for the child, if he has one.

WARNING! There is a possibility of exemption from the obligation to work throughout Norway. The exceptions include people over the age of 60 or a parent caring for a child under the age of 1 (single people - 7 years old) or caring for relatives who require it.

How to apply?

To be eligible for unemployment benefit, you must first register with NAV. The application must be submitted in Norwegian. You can do it without leaving your home, just go to this address. After you register as unemployed, you can apply for unemployment benefit.

Attachments to the application

Obtaining the right to unemployment benefit requires the submission of relevant attachments. The first step is to prepare employment certificates, contracts and other documentation that will provide officials with the following information:

  • date of commencement and completion of work,
  • working hours,
  • the reason for termination of employment,
  • notice period,
  • date on which the notice period ends.

If you do not have the documentation that shows the last day of termination, you must enclose the NAV 04-08.03 form (norw. Bekreftelse på sluttårsak / nedsatt arbeidstid - ikke permittert). Important! You do not need to submit documentation confirming the amount of earned income - as long as NAV asks you to do so.

The amount of the benefit

It is worth knowing that the amount of your unemployment benefit will be 62,4 percent of the wage you received in the conversion period. Usually it is 6 months, but you can ask the office to take into account your income for the last 36 months. The following forms of income are considered:

  • sickness benefits,
  • care additives,
  • care allowances,
  • training scholarships,
  • pregnancy benefits,
  • parental,
  • unemployment benefits from previous periods.

Working time

In order to determine the amount of the benefit, at the stage of applying for unemployment benefit in Norway, you must document the hours you have worked so far. For this purpose, the number of working hours for the last 6 months should be demonstrated. If you have worked for less than six months, you must show hours worked for the last 12 months. NAV also allows for the possibility of recalculating the amount of funds granted from the last 36 months.

Duration of the allowance

Unemployment benefit in Norway is granted in two variants. If the reported income is more than twice the G index, the benefit is granted for 104 weeks. However, if the reported income is less than twice the G index, unemployment benefit is granted for a period of 52 weeks.

What to do when the benefit period has ended?

After the period for which the unemployment benefit has been granted, NAV automatically ceases to pay the funds. If you have lost your entitlement to benefits due to the passage of time and you are still unemployed, you can apply for it again.
