Internships in Norway are just one of the solutions that will allow us to get out of unemployment. The unemployment benefit will help you survive this difficult period, but certain conditions must be met to qualify for this benefit. Find out how the Norwegian social system is able to support people who temporarily lost their jobs.

Unemployment benefit in Norway

If you have lost your job, the first solution to get out of temporary problems is to apply for unemployment benefit. The most important criterion which gives us the right to apply for this benefit is working in the last calendar year during which we will achieve the minimum income. The gross salary should exceed the so-called "G value" (baseline value) by a minimum of 1,5 times.

Criteria for granting the right to unemployment benefit

The "G value" is set each year in May. It is currently NOK 96. In practice, this means that the right to unemployment benefit is acquired when we earn at least 883 NOK in the previous calendar year. The second necessary condition is the loss of at least 145,325% of the previous working time, i.e. the loss of the so-called "Time base".

How is the time base calculated?

When you are entitled to unemployment benefit in Norway, you must check how many working hours per week are defined as "basic working time". This is a key issue in terms of the payment of benefits when we are working during the week. In this case, half of the specified base is exceeded. If this happens, the allowance will not be paid for that accounting period.

The next calculation is made with the next registration card. If this time we do not exceed 50% of the basis, the benefit will be paid to us for a given period. However, if we have performed a specific job this month, the amount of the allowance will be reduced by the equivalent of the hours worked. In practice, this means that if, for example, our time base is set at 12 hours a week, and we work 6,5 hours, we will not be paid unemployment benefit for this period.

WARNING! To be eligible for this benefit at all, we must be registered as unemployed!

The above conditions are not the only ones that must be met in order to be entitled to unemployment benefits. This benefit is also paid under the criterion of readiness to work, also outside our place of residence. Even if there is no suitable position for us in our region, it may turn out that you can find it elsewhere.

We must also be ready to take up employment in any industry, as long as we are physically able to face the challenges. In practice, this means that even if we have higher education, but we are healthy, we will have to be willing to start working, for example, in production or in a store.

Inexperience? Internships in Norway are a support!

NAV has also provided for forms of support for the unemployed, even in a situation where we lack qualifications and the employer still wants to give us a job opportunity. The choice is much wider than just internships in Norway. The most popular methods are primarily the following:

Internships in Norway

  • After talking with the employer and determining whether there is a possibility of employment or acquiring professional competences, the person concerned may take up an internship in Norway. It is 'work' during the same hours as under an employment contract, except that the benefit is still paid by NAV. The same institution reimburses funds resulting from travel to work. However, the obligation to insure belongs to the employer.

Mentor

  • If the employer appoints a person who is to help us in obtaining the necessary training and competences, as well as adapting to the new working conditions, you can apply for a refund of the hours that the employee devotes to this. The employer receives such a refund.

The so-called "Lønnstilskudd"

  • If the employer wants to hire us and has objections to our competences and ability to adapt to a new job, we can get help from NAV as an incentive for the employer. It is a refund of the total costs of our employment up to 50% for a specified period (eg 3 months). The advantage for us is the fact that we are bound by a normal contract, while the benefits for the employer are the reduction of employment costs by half. However, there is a maximum reimbursement limit, which is set by NAV together with the employer, which may be, for example, NOK 15 per month. The boundary is determined by the district NAV branch, which is responsible for the economy of the district.

The so-called "Inkluderingstillskudd"

  • That is, reimbursement of costs necessary for our practice or work. This can be, for example, the purchase of workwear or a special adaptation of the workplace. The employer receives such a refund.

Individual paid course, so-called "AMO".

  • NAV can pay for the necessary course which results in obtaining a permanent place of employment. To receive this form of support, we must provide an application to NAV along with a confirmation from the employer that it is possible to start work after completing the course.

Other courses

  • We can get the opportunity to participate in a professional course free of charge. Obtaining additional qualifications will allow us to become more competitive candidates on the labor market. For people from Poland, this may be the current so-called "Yrkes norsk" - a Norwegian language course with a practical attitude to job search.
There are also professional courses, e.g. preparation for work in a shop, in security, or courses authorizing you to drive forklifts. In such a situation, NAV pays for our participation in such a course.

What if I am not entitled to unemployment benefits?

NAV carries out an analysis of our residence and work permit in Norway, and also verifies the degree of settlement. It is worth knowing that the so-called "Reisebevis" does not give us unlimited possibilities to stay and work in Norway. If we ask the police about this issue, we will receive a reply that it is only a confirmation of a valid document in Norway, as well as a residence and work permit, provided we meet certain conditions. Most often, this condition is the ability to support oneself - or family - in Norway.

If we have neither work nor income ...

This condition is met if you are receiving unemployment benefit. Worse, if we have neither a job nor any other income in Norway. Then we have no grounds to stay in this country any longer. The only option is to immediately find a new job or return to the country.

Exception: stay longer than 5 years

The situation is different if we have lived in Norway for more than 5 years, and during that time we managed to settle down and we brought our family to this country. We have a home and our children attend a Norwegian school. In this case, we can prove the degree of settlement and show that we are still subject to further NAV aid.

If we are not entitled to the allowance, but we are entitled to the above-mentioned forms of social assistance, we will receive funds from NAV, ie the so-called "Tilltakkspenger". It is a kind of support for a person actively improving their professional competences. The costs of necessary travel, childcare (kindergarten or SFO) and subsistence costs are then reimbursed. They are paid in the form of the so-called "Days' wages" for each day of activity (applies to, for example, participation in a course or internship).

Internships in Norway - this is not the only form of support

As you can see, apprenticeships in Norway are not the only form of support for the unemployed. There are also, among others, funds for retrofitting employment costs, free vocational courses and many others. The Norwegian unemployment assistance system has many tools. However, there are conditions that must be met in order to be eligible for this assistance. Nevertheless, even if we lost our job in Norway, we can count on state aid.
