Fat Thursday, celebrated four days before Lent, is one of the most awaited days by gourmets around the world, especially in countries such as Poland, Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic. It is a culinary celebration that precedes the time of restraint and moderation, which is the period of Lent in Christianity.

Tradition and Delicacies – history

The history of Fat Thursday dates back to the Middle Ages, when it was believed that on this day it was worth eating as many fatty foods as possible to protect the body during fasting. Today "Fat Thursday" it's a day when bakeries, confectioneries and home kitchens work at full speed, preparing a wide selection of delicacies. It is estimated that approximately 100 million and other delicacies will be consumed in Poland.

The most characteristic dish of this day are donuts, delicious, fried dough filled with various fillings, such as jam, vanilla cream or chocolate. Donuts are literally in demand, and queues to the confectionery shop can be several dozen meters long. In addition to donuts, other fatty delicacies, such as faworki or sękacz, also appear on the tables.

The tradition of celebrating Fat Thursday also has social significance. It is a time for family and friend meetings and integration workplaces or schools. People often organize house parties or bake donuts together, which makes this day even more charming.

In Poland, Fat Thursday is celebrated with great pomp and joy. Everyone is eager to get involved in the preparations, and they treat the tradition itself with great warmth and sentiment. Therefore, even though it is one day a year, it always arouses great emotions and smiles on the faces of many people.
