Last Tuesday, a man attacked a woman near the center of Haugesund and died as a result. According to media reports, the 48-year-old man charged with murder is likely mentally ill.

Attack in Haugesund

We wrote recently about the situation on Tuesday, when a 48-year-old man attacked a random woman in the Var Frelsers cemetery. Unfortunately, the victim died as a result of the injuries, which the media reported on Wednesday morning. Police officers did not find any connection between the attacker and the victim, therefore it is believed that the deceased woman was an accidental target.

Known to the police

The man who committed the murder is known among the officers because in the past he was often convicted of various kinds of crimes. In the course of the investigation, it turns out that in 2017 the attacker was accused of rape and threats, but he did not go to prison for it, but to a psychiatric hospital. Research has shown that the man was insane during the attack on the woman, and the problem he had with drugs had no effect on the incident. Eventually the case was closed.

Psychological problems

Due to the case from 2017, the police cannot rule out that the man was not acting under the influence of illness. The defendant's lawyer, Erik Lea, reports on TV2 "my client is very inconsistent in his testimony and appears to be mentally ill." Currently, until the case is resolved, the attacker will remain in custody. The police add, however, that tests to check the accused's sanity during the attack are possible.
