50 new streets in Oslo are closed. The Green Party has been surprising recently with many changes and modernizations concerning the automotive industry: the elimination of many parking spaces in cities (including, among others, in the center of Oslo), the introduction of new road gates. There is another proposal ahead of us that may have as many supporters as opponents: closing 50 streets to car traffic in Oslo. How will it work in practice?
50 new streets in Oslo are closed. What about the originators themselves?
“Most of the people in Oslo are in favor of more streets with no car traffic. Therefore, we want to introduce the concept of temporary street closures to traffic in the near future. Residents can even take the initiative if they want their street to be sometimes more than just a road. ”(…).
“The program will work in such a way that it is the residents themselves who can apply for the road closure of the street. If people want it, the municipality will also contribute to the development of their street - for example by installing benches, playgrounds and planting plants. " - city councilor, member of the city development council. Dagbladet Hanna Marcussen (MDG) for Nattevisen.
50 new streets in Oslo closed to Car - voices of opposition!
The opposition accuses the Green Party of not wanting to listen to the citizens' needs. Stenersen from Frp does not hide his fears:
“It's time for Green Party politicians to also start listening to citizens who don't want closed streets, difficult driving conditions and unplanned city projects. We have dealt with many citizens' initiatives against closed streets, but with over 80 goals road in Oslo, this work is simply not very reliable. Moreover, the current City Council has not managed to create too many good playgrounds for children in the city center over all these years. At MRP, we want a vibrant city and we want to enjoy streets accessible to all residents.” - Stenersen from Frp for Nattevisen.
