An unusual situation takes place in one of the well-known Norwegian medical facilities. Psychiatric patients have to sleep in offices. Østfold Hospital has massive overcrowding in its psychiatric ward and has to use office space as a bedroom. The hospital has existed since 2015. Many changes have occurred since then. Patients with somatic and psychiatric problems are treated in one place. At the beginning, there were 200 hospital beds. Their number was suddenly reduced to 90. This situation should never have happened, but it does and causes considerable chaos. What does the hospital management say about this? How do employees react? Read the text!

Østfold Hospital: overcrowding. Employees cannot stand the pressure of their duties and leave ...

“Employees perceive the working situation in psychiatry as extremely demanding. Many give up, they can no longer cope. People get frustrated going to work. Patients are already sleeping everywhere. All rooms and offices are used to accommodate each patient, ”says Marius Bjørndalen from Østfold Kalnes Hospital.

What are the causes of the problems?

Unfortunately, no budget for the purchase of additional beds or equipment. The hospital is doing everything possible to deal with this situation somehow. Unfortunately, it's not that easy at all. The hospital doesn't have much savings. He is also struggling with serious financial problems. The lack of support from the commune is a big blockage on the way to any improvement action. Despite the chaos, the hospital ensures that patients' stays in individual rooms are distributed responsibly. We want to provide patients with the greatest possible comfort. At least some of them sleep in conference rooms. The estimated percentage of overcrowding is already 110% at the moment. It's a lot. Unfortunately, the overcrowding in the ward generates further problems, such as the aforementioned employee stress, exhaustion and frustration as well as violence among patients. In addition, there are many tensions. To sum up. Hopefully this difficult situation will improve quickly.
