In the Universum's annual study of computer science students, for the first time, the police are part of companies and organizations from which students can choose as employers. It resulted in the fifth place among the most attractive employers.
- This is a very satisfying effect of the purposeful work and unique opportunities in the agency - says Catherine Janson, director of police ICT services.

An important aspect is undoubtedly having the most modern knowledge

Every year, Universum selects the most attractive employers in Norway in the categories of law, health, humanities, engineering and science, IT and business. The police have been deliberately working on digitizing agencies for a long time. An important aspect is having the most modern knowledge needed to develop and operate very complex IT systems throughout the agency.

– We are technologists with a mission – says director Catherine Janson

- Every time the police have a task, we are close to technology. We care about the security of Norway and our citizens, and for this we also need IT systems that operate 365 days a year. He adds that criminals never take time off.
Police as an agency is immediately fifth, for the first time the agency is part of the usual elections that students receive in the survey: Google, Microsoft, Equinor, DNB, the police and the military in sixth place.

It is satisfying that we are so attractive to computer science students

The most important role of the police is to ensure the safety of the people of Norway, and for this the agency needs the best minds. Both outside on patrol and inside in front of the computer screen.
"It is very gratifying that we are so attractive to computer science students," says Police Director Benedicte Bjørnland.

The police must face the crimes of the future, and digitization and IT literacy are key

The Police Director points out that the police must face the crimes of the future, and digitization and IT competences are key.
- This shows that the work of the police on modernization, using technology to solve the task and digitization of the agency made us an attractive employer. He adds that we need the best minds to face the tasks.

We decide to hire more often instead of using consultants

- We fulfill an important social mission and we will need great people. Therefore, we decide to hire more often instead of using consultants. We save money on it, but we also make sure that important knowledge does not disappear.

. Janson believes that science and technology go hand in hand.

- For example, we are working on an exciting project in which we are trying to use data to predict a motion picture. That is, when and where there will be heavy traffic and other things the police patrol needs to know in an emergency. This way, you can get to the crime scene faster. It is worth having such knowledge and development competences in your own agency.

The police are the most attractive among law students

In 2021, the police also ranked first as the most attractive employer in Norway among law students. The supreme law enforcement officer for the thirteenth year in a row.
"It's satisfying, we will always try to attract the best talent here, too," says the police director.
- It's not something we should take for granted, but we should deserve it every year. At the same time, it is very nice that law students put us at the forefront, says Police Director Benedicte Bjørnland.

. Working for such an important social institution is something that many are interested in.

With such a clear first place among prospective lawyers and advocates, Bjørnland believes it is clear that working for such an important community institution is something that many are interested in.
- I think that our social mission also appeals to lawyers. As a lawyer, I can find myself in this, says Bjørnland.
