. A unanimous jury has selected Sandnessjøen Secondary School in Nordland as the winner of the 2021 Queen Sonja School Award for Equality and Inclusion.
– Sandnessjøen High School is a worthy winner. It is distinguished by its long-term nature work with student integration and safety and well-being a learning environment that pays attention to individual students. The school also makes every effort to students had a safe community and school, says jury chairman Inga Bostad.
This year to school award 19 schools were nominated. The jury emphasizes that the school is a positive driving force in local community and cooperates with local companies to provide work experience for their students.
Sandnessjøen wins Queen Sonja's award
Sandessjøen Secondary School has 450 students and 110 teachers and is located on the coast of Helgeland in Nordland. Many students live in halls of residence, and the school organizes several evening classes for all students. The school took on great responsibility for integration into society. It focuses, among other things, on language teaching Norwegian as part integration. It is important that the school involves students in everything it does. Additionally, the school has good and systematic cooperation with students' family homes. The school's vision is "quality with the individual in mind".
– We are happy and proud to have won the award. We are committed to equality and inclusion in everyday life. For us, everyone is equally important, regardless of skin color, gender, origin and whether the student has good or slightly worse results. Safety and well-being come first, without such foundations it is impossible to conduct good teaching or other pedagogical activities, says Arne Tømmervold, director secondary school in Sandnessjøen.
The awards ceremony in December
Her Majesty Queen Sonja took the initiative awarding the prize. In 2021, she will award it for the 15th time. The award consists of 250 crowns, a diploma and a work of art titled "Growth", signed by the Queen.
Queen Sonja will present the award in Sandnessjøen on December 2, 2021.
