Fremtind does the same as Gjensidige and Tryg and raises the limit on when a damaged car can be destroyed, from 60 to 80 percent of the car's value. The measure will stimulate more repairs and greater use used car parts.

– The insurance industry has figured out how it can contribute to a more circular practice cars and workshops. We are now taking important steps to repair, not destroy. We also want to increase the share of used parts in car repairs. CEO Turid Grotmoll from Fremtind informs, insurance company SpareBank 1 and DNB.

For many years, the insurance industry has determined when the car was completely left damaged, it was 60 percent of the car's value. This means that many cars are scrapped rather than repaired. Especially VAT for electric car parts, rather than the car itself, has led to a significant increase in the number of new cars being scrapped.

Decisions at the governmental level

In light of the trend towards a circular economy and increased sustainability, the so-called 60 percent rule is ripe for revision.

– When we increase the waste limit now, we help reduce emissions and increase requirements for repair and reuse. Then we expect that politicians and the car and workshop industries will be unanimous, says Grotmoll.

Fremtind has challenged current political leaders on several occasions and contributed to the government's circular economy strategy.

– We asked them to decide that the reuse of parts must be included in the product warranty in Norway. We'll take a look regulations regarding waste that has not been audited for 14 years. And last but not least, the government should consider VAT exemption for parts for electric cars, says Grotmoll

What prevents the increased use of used car parts?

The development means there will be more repairs to newer cars under warranty.

– The automotive industry can use used parts for repairs to a greater extent than currently. We also encourage them to reassessment old procedures to maintain car warranties. Now there are serious players in car assembly and good markets for high-quality used parts, says the CEO.

Changes in car insurance. It has to be safe for drivers

It's mostly about o the use of car parts, such as body parts, in repairs that maintain the same quality as a new part.

– Drivers they must have both real and experienced safety when leaving the workshop. If so, we are sure that many customers think that there is nothing wrong with used parts. Surveys of both our customers and the public show that the vast majority want to contribute to reducing emissions, says Grotmoll.
