– We want to help refugees lead a meaningful everyday life. For many, it is important to be able to use their competences and participate in social life. It will also be positive for professionals in our health service to have more colleagues. That's why we are now taking further steps to make it easier for refugees work in health care in Norway – says Minister of Health and Care Ingvild Kjerkol.

Today she informed the local government and state authorities that Ukrainian refugees could be used as assistants in the health service. This also applies to refugees who are not permitted to work as medical personnel. The assistant is instructed and supervised by the responsible medical personnel who are responsible for control and supervision. The Norwegian Health Directorate pointed out that the use of Ukrainian refugees as assistants may be of particular importance in relation to mapping the health condition of newly arrived refugees.

They may be exempt from certain documentation requirements

Refugees who are unable to provide full documentation of their education will generally not be eligible for admission permit or license in Norway. However, exceptions can be made if the applicant has a minimum of documentation. The Ministry of Health and Welfare has now asked the Norwegian Directorate of Health to take action for the release refugees from Ukraine certain documentation requirements, provided it is professional.

The ministry also asked the Norwegian Directorate of Health to consider a separate program for the approval of medical professions for refugees. This applies to those who do not have documentation of completed education. The program will make it easier for refugees to approve their education. NOKUT (The National Authority for Quality in Education) has a similar approval system targeting refugees, but this does not apply to the medical professions.
