Statistics from the Norwegian Road Administration show that as many as 657 cars had faults that had to be rectified before the vehicle could be approved in 000. The most common faults include failures in the suspension of the wheels, brakes and lights.
– As many as 26,2 percent of faults concern the car's brakes. Examples of such faults include excessively worn brake pads and discs, rust on the discs or brake lines, or too poor braking efficiency. It is important that such errors are detected and corrected, says Leif Magne Halvorsen from Norwegian Road Administration.

The statistics include all light vehicles (under 3500 kg) that passed EU inspection in 2022. Light vehicles must pass EU inspection every two years, and for the first time four years after first registration. An annual inspection is required for emergency vehicles and taxis.
Regular maintenance often pays off
Another area where a lot of faults are found is the axles, wheels, tires and suspension. This applies to 25,8 percent. of all checked light vehicles.
“These are moving parts that wear out in all cars. By carrying out regular maintenance, parts can be replaced continuously, thus avoiding unnecessary wear and tear before faults are rectified. Then you can avoid driving with serious errors between inspections and at the same time avoid the lack of approval of the car in the EU inspection - says Halvorsen.
Safety part and environmental part
EU-kontroll consists of a safety part and an environmental part. In the safety department, elements relevant to road safety are checked, such as brakes, lights, wheel suspension and rust in load-bearing elements. In the environmental part, it is checked whether the car does not emit excessive exhaust gases, does not make noise, does not have oil leaks, etc.

The last issue that many car owners may notice themselves are faults related to the condition and operation of the lights. Over 104 cars inspected in 000 had problems with this. It can be light bulbs that do not work or when the lamps are broken. You don't need to be a mechanic to notice that the bulb is not lit. A bulb that does not light up will be flagged during inspection and may result in the vehicle not being EU-approved. If your brake lights do not work at all, you will be disqualified from driving that car until the fault has been rectified and a follow-up inspection has been carried out. When the main bulb is not working, there is also no way to check the setting (position) of the lamp. This is a separate checkpoint where errors will also occur.
Check simple things yourself before the review
– I recommend that everyone regularly checks the operation of the lights, and additional checks before the car is inspected. Then you can avoid another visit to the checkpoint, says Halvorsen.
