From January to September this year, Norwegians spent CZK 6,8 billion on purchases abroad, of which CZK 2,9 billion was spent on groceries and everyday needs.
Norwegian residents spent NOK 6,8 billion on purchases abroad
According to new statistics on Border Trade, Norwegians spent a total of CZK 6,8 billion on one-day trips abroad in the first three quarters of this year. At the same time, 3,6 million such trips were made, and the average purchase value for one trip was NOK 1892.
– In the first quarter of this year, we spent CZK 1,9 billion on purchases during one-day trips abroad. The second quarter included Easter and many holidays, which increased border trade to 2,6 billion kroner. In the third quarter, the value of purchases decreased slightly, reaching 2,3 billion kroner," says senior advisor Guro Henriksen from Statistics Norway (SSB).
Mostly for groceries and everyday needs
– The people of Norway clearly they spent spend most of your money on groceries and daily needs when shopping abroad. In the period from January to September this year, we allocated CZK 2,9 billion for this type of products, which constitutes 43% of the total amount spent during border shopping, informs Guro Henriksen.

The shopping basket also includes a large number of products that are highly taxed in Norway. Alcohol accounts for 13% of purchases, of which 8% is wine and spirits, and 5% is beer and cider. 5% of the money spent on border shopping was spent on snus, and another 5% on cigarettes and tobacco. Carbonated drinks and mineral water are popular products among Norwegians when shopping abroad. Carbonated drinks accounted for 7% of all border purchases, and chocolate and sweets 4%.
– Additionally, Norwegians spent CZK 721 million on visits to cafes, restaurants and other services during one-day trips abroad, most of which was spent on dining options, adds Guro Henriksen.
14,3% price increase for food and non-alcoholic drinks in Sweden
A large part of border shopping for day trips abroad is groceries, and the main trade destination is Sweden. According to data from the Swedish statistical office SCB, prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages in Sweden increased by 14,3% from January to September this year compared to last year in the same period. In comparison, the prices of the same products in Norway increased by 10,1% according to Norwegian consumer price index.
