It is necessary for the functioning of our body, but elevated cholesterol can cause many negative consequences that can seriously affect our health. How to fight it?

What is cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a substance that occurs in the body of every human being. It is responsible for the work of every cell in our body. Throughout our lives, it builds up in the inner walls of our blood vessels. The reason for this behavior is the bad work of our heart, which often leads to a heart attack. After high blood pressure, high cholesterol is the second cause of heart attacks.

Our body's total cholesterol

In Poland, more than 70 percent of adults suffer from elevated cholesterol, and only one in three people cares about its reduction. Our lifestyle, diet, diet, age, whether we smoke or drink alcohol, strongly affect the amount of cholesterol in our body. Every adult should check the level of this substance regularly. This study is called a lipidogram. If the level of fat in our body is 200-239 md / dL then our cholesterol is elevated and we should be interested in ways to reduce it.

Healthy cholesterol

Healthy cholesterol is called HDL and is considered "daily". It is claimed that this type of substance is intended to transport excess cholesterol to our liver, where it is broken down. Additionally, it has a defensive function and protects against heart attacks. However, if its amount is too low, the risk of a heart attack or other disease of this system is significantly increased.

LDL cholesterol

It's the bad twin brother of HDL cholesterol. Its excess is harmful, but it is also needed by our body. This cholesterol molecule has large amounts of fat. If the concentration of this type of cholesterol is too high, then it builds up on the walls of our arteries, leading, for example, to atherosclerosis, stroke or the aforementioned heart attack. LDL delivers cholesterol from the liver to the cells of the body, so despite our bad reputation, we need it too.

How to lower cholesterol without medication?

It is important that a person who wants to get rid of excess cholesterol in their body should stop smoking if they have a habit of doing so. In addition, we should be physically active, regardless of age, keep an eye on the diet and how much we weigh, because being overweight increases the likelihood of coronary diseases. Finally, we should make sure that there is no room for stress in our lives.
