Minstelønn - the minimum wage in Norway

The minimum wage is the established minimum wage. Minimum wages may be set by law and then apply to all workers in the country or may be agreed through a collective agreement (tariffavtale) between workers 'and employers' organizations - known as collective wage agreements (tariffavtalt minstelønn).

There is no statutory minimum wage in Norway, which means for an employee that if he or she is not a member of any workers' organization, there are no rules governing the level of wages. The Main Trade and Services Organization (HSH) has proposed a statutory minimum wage in Norway to avoid social dumping.

Foreign worker

Although there is no statutory minimum wage in Norway, they have been introduced in some industries to protect foreign workers from worse wages and working conditions than others in the company holding the same position.

For construction, shipbuilding, electricity and cleaning jobs where accommodation away from home is required. The employer must cover the necessary travel expenses at the beginning and end of the assignment. This includes a contract that is made between the employer and the employee. This should be agreed before the employer sends the employee on the contract. This obligation to cover travel and accommodation costs only applies to travel to Norway.

Equal treatment

Employees hired by contract employment agencies (bemaningsforetak) must have the same working conditions and remuneration as if they were directly employed by the company. It is the employment agency's responsibility to ensure these conditions are met, but the principle of equal treatment also applies to the borrower.

According to the Equality Act, women and men working in the same enterprise are entitled to equal remuneration for the same work and work of equal value. It is also not possible to discriminate on the basis of ethnic origin, religion or belief, disability, sexual orientation, age or political opinion (the Work Environment Act).
