Health and Safety Representative must look after the interests of employees in matters relating to the working environment If he finds outthat employees at your workplace are at risk of accidents and/ or health hazards, must notify management immediately. It should also notify you of the threat people at risk.

The health and safety officer must look after the interests of employees in matters relating to the working environment. As a safety inspector, he must ensure that the company is well organized and maintained, and that work is carried out in a manner that respects the safety of employees.

It is the employer's responsibility to provide a safe working environment. This means that the employer must, within a reasonable period of time, repair conditions that put employees at risk or for accidents at work. You have to judge for yourself what is a reasonable time within which the employer can respond to your inquiry.

If your employer is unable or unwilling to resolve a working environment problem, you can contact the workplace environment committee. You can also contact the Norwegian Labor Inspectorate .

If there is an immediate threat to the life and health of the workers, the safety representative may stop work pending an assessment by the Norwegian Labor Inspectorate. One must first assess whether the dangers can be avoided by any other means.

Responsibilities of the health and safety inspector

The workplace safety representative must be actively involved in the company's health and safety. You should also  consult  with Varneombud when planning and implementing activities affecting the working environment within your own conservation area. This also includes the establishment, implementation and maintenance of the company's internal control system.

All companies with 50 or more employees are required to appoint Working Environment Commission (AMU) .

If the company does not have a working environment committee,that pe-plenipotentiary Health and Safety at Work should:

  • evaluates and discusses matters relating to the health service at work and the internal security service.
  • evaluates training programs relevant to the work environment,
  • plans processes that require approval from the Norwegian Labor Inspectorate
  • process other plans that have a significant impact on the work environment, including purchase of machinery, rationalization, organization of working time, security measures, and the creation and maintenance of internal control systems.
  • reviews reports of occupational diseases, accidents at work, and investigations in the field of occupational hygiene. It helps the employer to explain the causes and put in place measures to prevent relapse

The health and safety officer must listen to and consult with colleagues beforehand  solutions will be presented to the employer.

Choosing Mr.e-plenipotentiary for health and safety

As a rule, all companies must choose their safety representative. The safety representative must be selected from among the company's employees. All employees have the right to vote. The health and safety representative is elected once for two years.

Role of the Norwegian Labor Inspectorate (Arbeidstilsynet)

The Norwegian Labor Inspectorate provides guidance in the regulations regarding the duties and role of Mrs.representative Security. In addition, the Norwegian Labor Inspectorate can handle cases and supervise compliance with the law in this area.
