As Nye Veier reports, emissions from Norwegian construction sites must reduce. Fossil fuels must then be replaced by, among other things, electricity. As part of the Nye Veier E18 Rugtvedt-Langangen project, energy company Skagerak Energi and French general contractor Eiffage are collaborating to operate construction equipment using large battery boxes. The pilot project shows the path to zero emissions construction sites.
The pilot project aims to power cranes construction used for construction bridges with electricity from a large battery instead of diesel generators. Skagerak Energi charges batteries off-site and sends energy where it is needed. This is done without the need for a thorough modernization of the local power grid.
Energy in a big box
– We have developed a solution for mobile batteries. It is a flexible system that can be adapted to different needs on construction sites. The crane in Langangen receives its operating energy directly from the battery. It is also possible to use this technology to charge a battery-powered excavator, for example, explains Håvard Hadland, technical manager at Skagerak Energi's innovation and business development department.

A week on energy from one battery
A large construction crane can run for up to a week on a single battery with today's work operations. When the crane comes into full operation later in the project, Skagerak Energi will deliver fully charged batteries more frequently. The system enables energy to be delivered in a flexible way that can be quickly scaled up or down as needed. Hadland and his colleagues track energy status in the app and ensure timely delivery.
Ambitious targets for fossil-free construction sites
Climate and environmental ambitions are the reason why Eiffage Génie Civil is building E18 Rugtvedt-Langangen for Nye Veier. They are the third largest construction company in France with 75 employees and are motivated by Norway's climate and environmental ambitions.
– We are doing our best to meet the requirements of the Norwegian authorities. We are interested in looking at technologies and developments to achieve ambitious goals for fossil-free construction sites. Mobile batteries give us a good opportunity to test climate-friendly solutions and gain new knowledge, emphasizes Eiffage's environmental manager, Cyrille Beaux.
Nye Veier has connected Skagerak Energi with a French contractor
– Our client also wants to reduce emissions. We meet our customers' wishes and help to develop good solutions, says Beaux.
– Nye Veier must halve greenhouse gas emissions from construction by 2030. It must also contribute to the overall restructuring of the transport sector in a more climate and environmentally friendly direction. Therefore, such pilot projects are important, both to develop new solutions and to assess which solutions produce the best results for society. Nye Veier wants to be a driving force, challenger and facilitator of new solutions. As far as we know, this is the first time that replaceable battery containers have been tested in a major infrastructure project in Norway. Also, the fact that this is happening in one of our facilities is completely in line with our climate ambitions, says Maarten Lohne van der Eynden, who is responsible for sustainability at New Roads.
