The Norwegian Public Roads Authority has carried out a major technical update of the digital driving license application. The new mobile application is being implemented in stages.

New version of the digital driving license application

– From April 9, access will be available to five percent of users, i.e. approximately 125 out of 000 million. When the first pool goes live, both former and new users will have access to it in April, says senior advisor and product owner Bujar Llukaj of Norwegian Board Public Roads.

Digital driving license

– Digital driving license introduced by Norwegian Public Roads Authority As of October 1, 2019, it currently has over 2,4 million users. This is a service that can be used free of charge by anyone who has one valid Norwegian driving license. However, the condition is to have a digital image in the image register and signatures of the National Road Administration. The digital driving license is only valid for driving on in Norway. When driving outside Norway, you must have your physical driving license with you, says Llukaj.

Everyone must log in using the ID port

The changes are technical improvements and will not be noticeable for most users.

– This means that nothing has changed in appearance and functionality. Previous driving license app users who have enabled 'auto update' on their mobile phone will find that the update to version 2.0 takes place automatically. Those with the manual update must go to the Appstore, Google Play or Huawei App Gallery to download the latest version. What all users have in common is that they need to log in again using the IS port after the update, Llukaj says.

Not for everyone

Unfortunately, there will be a group that will no longer be able to use a digital driving license because they have an old phone that does not support the necessary operating system (OS).

– The reason we have set higher requirements for newer versions of the operating system is to further increase the security of digital driving licenses. Previous versions of Android and iOS no longer receive security updates, Llukaj says.

IOS AND Android, older phone versions

Information about older Apple phones: Users with IOS versions older than 15 cannot use the digital driving license. This is that users with older phones that do not support the minimum OS 15 will no longer have access to the digital driving license after updating to version 2.0, even if they have a valid driving license.

Information about older Android phones ( all phones from different companies) : Users with Android version older than 10 cannot use the digital driving license. This is that users with older phones that do not support the minimum OS 10 will no longer have access to the digital driving license after updating to version 2.0, even if they have a valid driving license.
