Tunnel cleaning in Stavanger. How will it affect traffic?

– We understand that road work can create challenges for road users, but it is important to remember that we are working for them, says construction manager Rowan W. Zwart of Norwegian Road Administration Public.

Tunnel washing is one of the measures necessary to achieve this roads in the national and European road network were always safe and available.

`` We are trying to minimize the inconvenience for road users by adapting tunnel washing to the time of day when traffic is light, '' she adds, emphasizing that tunnel cleaning is a purely routine job that road users in the Stavanger area are familiar with.

Eiganes and Hundvåg

The first stage is the Eiganes and Hundvåg tunnels at weeks 46 and 47.

Work takes place on weekdays between 22:00 - 06:00. The exceptions are Buøy and Lunde, where tunnel washing may take place between 20:00 and 06:00.

The tunnels will be closed in one direction in one of the tunnels during the works. Consequently, drivers must use alternative detour options. Only emergency services are allowed to pass.

Tunnel washing and technical inspection are important for traffic safety. Cleaning covers the road and shoulders, as well as side and overhead technical devices and installations.

“While we're still inside and working in the tunnels, we'll also consider taking the opportunity to test the technical equipment and do other necessary work,” adds Zwart.

Byfjord and Mastrafjord

Then to Byfjord and Mastrafjord tunnels, that's in week 48.

Work usually starts at 22:00, except on Sunday to Monday, at 00:00.

The column runs continuously with no column times. Emergency services can pass by. Scheduled bus and animal transport can pass without the guide's car after talking to the traffic conductor.

When the works on the Byfjord Tunnel are completed, the relevant works on the Mastrafjord Tunnel will commence. Here it will be a column ride following the same pattern.

Cleaning covers the roadway, side surfaces and walls, as well as side and overhead technical equipment and installations.

- We will empty the sandfang, or maybe we want to test the technical equipment and do other necessary work - says Zwart.

Ryfast

At week 50 it's the Ryfylke Tunnel.

The works will be carried out at night between 20:00 p.m. and 05:00 a.m. from Sunday to Friday. When one tunnel is closed, there is two-way traffic in the other.

Forwarding traffic usually takes 15 to 30 minutes at the beginning and end of each night. During this time, both driving directions will be closed to traffic. Only emergency services are allowed to pass.

Cleaning covers the roadway, side surfaces and walls, as well as side and overhead technical equipment and installations.

- We will empty the sandfang, or maybe test the technical equipment and do other necessary work while we work at Ryfast, which with its 14,4 kilometers is the longest and deepest underwater tunnel in the world - concludes Zwart.
