The McDonald's burger chain buys Norwegian cheese products, sends them to Germany for processing, and then returns them to Norway under a new name.
– This applies to cheddar and Emmental cheese. We buy dairy raw material from Synnøve Finden. It is sent to Germany for processing before being sent back to Norway. Norwegian Gouda cheese is used for processing, communications manager Veronika Skagestad at McDonald's Norway tells Nationen.
Altogether, these are quotas for 2500 tons of dairy products. Whole milk, ice cream and milkshakes are produced and processed in Norway.
Norwegian gouda cheese turns into cheddar
- The reason for this practice is the high quality requirements. We have strict taste, melting and size requirements that we were unable to produce in Norway. We have strict quality standards that we must adhere to, says Skagestad.
He doesn't want to disclose how gouda cheese can be made into cheddar and emmental. Because it is information that is sensitive to competition. Cheddar is originally an English cheese, while Emmentaler, also known as Swiss cheese, comes from Emmedalen in Switzerland.
