The Norwegian Public Roads Authority wants to enable the use of more roads by vehicles with a total weight of up to 60 tons
On behalf of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration is now submitting a consultation proposal to allow more roads to be used by vehicles up to a total weight of 60 tonnes. The proposal to introduce a new road class will apply to timber transport, modular vehicles as well as 24-meter vehicles.
In Norway, in general, the maximum authorized length of vehicles is in general 19,5 meters and the maximum authorized total weight is 50 tonnes, unless otherwise stated for the section of road concerned. Exceptions to these regulations apply to 24 / 60 m / 24 tons timber trucks and 25,25 / 60 m / XNUMX tons modular trucks on sections deemed suitable for this purpose.
The amendment now proposed means that roads which are currently open to an axle load of 8 tonnes and a total weight of up to 50 tonnes can be opened to a total weight of 60 tonnes if the road owner so wishes. This is made possible by increasing the number of axles by placing them closer or increasing the length of the vehicle, within the applicable length limits.
However, when introducing a new road class, the decision on the classification of individual road sections will rest with the individual road owner.
