Will you have a summer job? Then you should also have an employment contract. Before you sign, however, it is important that you know what you are signing.

As an employee, you must always have a written employment contract. This applies regardless of whether it is a permanent or temporary position, e.g. extra help / alternate.

Director of Norwegian Labor Inspectorate, Trude Vollheim, encourages young people who take up a summer job to read their employment contract carefully. Even if it's "just" a summer or part-time job. This way you can make sure that the contract covers all the points it is supposed to include and that you are not signing something that is inappropriate or even illegal.

- We have, among others examples of employment contracts in which the employer requires information about the employee's health. Also contracts where the employee has to sign that he agrees to withhold certain amounts of remuneration if he breaks something, says Vollheim.

Requirements for what the employment contract must contain

The employment contract must contain information on the working hours, the agreed salary and the amount of the overtime bonus. It must also contain information about the notice period and the length of the breaks that you should have.

- An employment contract is the basic document related to entering into an employment relationship, says Vollheim, reminding you that the employer is responsible for drawing up a written employment contract.

Three tips for those who are going on a summer job

Managing Norwegian Labor Inspectorate summarizes some of the most important things a new employee needs to know:

1. You must have an employment contract. Read the employment contract carefully

We encourage you to ask your parents or someone you know with work experience to go through an employment contract / employment contract with you. You can also contact the information office of the Norwegian Labor Inspectorate if you have any questions.

2. You have the right to receive adequate training for the work you are expected to do.

It's about how the job needs to be done, which can make a difference to your health and safety.

3. Know your rights and tell if something is wrong.

Take responsibility for your work situation and tell your boss if something is wrong. If you are unsure of your rights or experience something that is not appropriate in the workplace, you can also contact the health and safety representative or the shop steward / employee representative.

When must the employment contract be ready?

If the employment lasts more than one month, the contract must be ready as soon as possible and no later than one month after the commencement of employment. In the case of an employment relationship lasting less than one month or when hiring labor, a written employment contract must be concluded immediately.
