After the March 1 application deadline, applicant data shows that 2500 teachers at the school want to pursue special education education, which is a record. For kindergarten teachers, the number is 840.

– We need more teachers with this knowledge. This will make kindergartens and schools even better able to detect and support children and students who require additional support sooner, says Minister of Knowledge Kari Nessa Nordtun.

In 2024, the government bynatotaled NOK 393 million for competence activities for teachers and other kindergarten staff and NOK 1,6 billion for further education of teachers and school principals. Thanks to this, from autumn 2024, education will include, among others: approximately 1850 kindergarten teachers and 5400 school teachers. More teachers will delve into practical and aesthetic subjects and special education

After special education, it was practical and aesthetic subjects, Norwegian and mathematics that most school teachers applied for further education. This year too record number people also submitted applications for further education in second language pedagogy. This is about how teachers should teach students whose mother tongue is other than Norwegian.

In the case of kindergarten teachers, the most candidates for special education are further education in counseling and language development and learning children's languages.

Approximately 11 applications were registered from school teachers and approximately 200 from kindergartens

In total, approximately 11 applications were registered from school teachers, which is approximately 200 fewer than in the same period last year, but 340 more than in 560. About 2022 people signed up for continuing education for kindergarten teachers, which is about 2100 fewer than at the same time last year. This is still nearly 400 more than in 600.

Good programs for teachers who want to develop and improve their qualifications

– We have very good professional development programs for teachers and I am glad that we do many want to develop professionally. We have great ambitions for kindergartens and schools, which is why we need professionally strong teachers who will help children and young people develop, improve and learn better. I am sure that the owners of kindergartens and schools will comply with the proposals, says Nordtun.

Now the applications must be approved by the owners of kindergartens and schools

Priority is given to school teachers who have registered for classes in the following subjects: mathematics, English, Norwegian, Sami and Norwegian language sign language. Additionally, separate funds have been allocated for those who want to continue their studies in special education and practical and aesthetic subjects.

At the beginning of May we will find out who teachers and managers of kindergartens and schools will receive further education. However, before the Directorate for Education can consider applications, kindergarten and school owners must approve and prioritize them based on what they believe requires expertise. Owners of kindergartens and schools can collect several applications until March 15.

– It is important for kindergarten and school owners to approve as many applications as possible so that teachers who need professional preparation receive them. Everyone will benefit from this. Both children, students and staff. Kindergartens and schools must be good places to work, where there is the possibility of development throughout professional life. This is important for both teacher recruitment and retention, Nordtun says.
