– We need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector, and therefore we also need to reduce emissions from construction sites. Excavators, wheel loaders, dump trucks and other large machines generate large greenhouse gas emissions. That is why we are now awarding grants for the implementation of 10 new pilot projects that aim to test various solutions to make construction sites emission-free in the future, said Transport Minister Jon-Ivar Nygård.

The pilot projects will be carried out by the Norwegian government institutions, Statens vegvesen, Nye Veier and Bane NOR. In total, CZK 65 million was allocated to the projects.

In 2023, the following projects will receive funding:

Conversion of a diesel-powered rail vehicle into a battery-powered one
(NOK 0,9 million)

Bane NOR wants to convert a diesel tractor into a battery-powered one. There are currently no battery-powered tractors on the market and little experience with battery technology. This is a new experience in the form of conversion from diesel to battery, as well as the use of battery technology in connection with railway operation and maintenance. The project received a $5 pledge last year million NOK. This year's grant is intended to continue the project.

Charging heavy electric machines

Battery electric excavator for the construction of the converter station in Sande
(NOK 1,3 million)

Bane NOR will use an electric excavator to build a transformer station in Sande. The goal is to test rechargeable electric machines on construction sites outside urban areas. The aim is also to help ensure that more machines are in use on the market and that accessibility, charging and setup are easier in the future. The project received a subsidy of CZK 3,1 million last year.

Emission-free construction sites

Contract Mechanism Knowledge Base Program (NOK 1,8 million)

Bane NOR will create a knowledge base to establish "best practice" contract requirements and assessments to promote zero-emission construction sites in transport operations. The pilot aims to lay the groundwork for transport agencies to coordinate contract requirements, which are used as a basis for procurement of road and rail development projects.

Charging heavy electric vehicles

Electrification in the construction of a new ecological street in the center of Gran
(NOK 12 million)

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration wants to test solutions that will increase the efficiency of the electric machine park. This project gets support for transporting battery trailers to where the excavators are located and working. The project also wants to test the requirements for mass transport and delivery of asphalt with electric trucks. There will also be a permanent charging station, which will be taken over by the municipality after the construction is completed and will be part of the charging infrastructure for heavy transport.

Charging infrastructure and charging equipment for heavy electric vehicles as part of Gjønnestunnel construction on E18 Lysaker-Ramstadsletta
(NOK 4 million)

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration will create infrastructure and equipment for charging heavy electric vehicles in mass transport. The project will create a truck charging point adjacent to the construction site in Gjønnes. This charging point can also be used to quickly charge an electric construction machine during lunch breaks. At the same time, trucks will also be able to charge. The project contributes to new knowledge on zero-emission trucks.

Knowledge and benefits

Battery use in the construction of E18 Vestkorridoren Strand – Ramstadsletta (NOK 10 million)

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration wants to develop electric drilling rigs and implement a battery bank in construction operations. The project will also explore the use of batteries to circumvent the capacity issue and improve the logistics associated with the use of electric machines.

Infrastructure for loading construction machinery on RV 15/E39 belonging to Nordfjord
(NOK 10 million)

The Norwegian Public Roads Authority wants to create an infrastructure for charging construction machinery and/or heavy electric vehicles. Three charging points are planned along RV 15/E39. The charging points will be able to be used in several projects in the coming years. They will contribute to gaining new knowledge about charging solutions for electric/zero emission trucks, operating and construction machinery and how this will work with mobile solutions for smaller facilities and road projects. This is the right knowledge to contribute to a sustainable emission reduction. The project also contributes to the testing of zero-emission solutions on construction sites in the transport sector.

Knowledge program on piloting emission-free construction sites
(NOK 4 million)

Nye Veier will continue the knowledge program started with a grant in 2022. The knowledge program was created in cooperation with the Norwegian Public Roads Administration and Bane NOR and will allow you to find good, cost-effective solutions for emission-free construction sites. The knowledge program also helps to gather and extract the knowledge outputs that other pilot projects will lead to.

Electrification of bridge works - Greenlandsbrua on the E18 Rugtvedt - Langangen project (NOK 15,8 million)

Nye Veier wants to replace diesel generators with electric generators. The project started in 2022. In 2023, the project wants to extend the electrification of the construction site with work on two bridges and two tunnels. In addition, a new technology will also be tested that will use electricity instead of gas for welding. The project will generate knowledge and experience in the field of temporary connection to the power grid in connection with the operation of power plants, which will lead to a permanent reduction of emissions in the sector. It will also bring logistical benefits in terms of reducing the need to transport diesel fuel. The project also has benefits beyond reducing emissions as the risk of local pollution and noise levels is reduced by switching from diesel to electric generators.

Sediment distribution on E39 Lyngdal East - Lyngdal West
(NOK 6 million)

Nye Veier will test sludge squeezing/filtering technology to reduce sludge volume, allowing transportation to be restricted to approved collection. Two test centers have been set up where two different technologies are being tested. The goal is to use the technology that gives the best results. The project carried out preparatory work and was launched in 2022. In 2023, Nye Veier will complete and expand the project.

In 2022, 12 projects were supported to test various solutions for emission-free construction sites. In total, it was NOK 62 million.
