World Cheese Awards 2018

It was today, November 2, that the world cheese competition took place in Bergen. The judges' hall in Bergen's Grieghallen was filled to the brim with people who tie their lives with cheese. On this day, the world's palates and noses judged which cheese in a given category would be the winner. The competition was not easy as the competition brought a record number of 3472 cheeses. The entire event was broadcast live on WCA TV.

What does the grading look like?

This year, all participants and evaluators found themselves in the great hall in Bergen's Grieghallen. Cheeses from as many as 6 continents have been evaluated by a carefully composed and selected group of technical experts, buyers, retailers and food authors. The judges worked in teams of 3 or 4 and awarded cheeses with gold, silver or bronze awards. What was taken into account were the rind of the cheese, the color of the cheese itself, its consistency, and most importantly, the taste. Each group of the jury awarded the table cheese with a gold award, and only later this cheese was judged by the Super Jury of 16 experts. Apart from the fact that cheeses are awarded gold, silver and bronze awards, cheeses also receive trophies such as country cheese.

Winners

This year was a bit of a surprise for some people. The winner was “Fanaost”, which was made in Ostegården in Bergen. Unfortunately, this result was quite shocking Jørna Hafslund from Ostegården because he was always the leader. As he commented on the result, "It's sick, I didn't have to wait so long for the result." It's worth mentioning that Norway out of 1st place she also took second place. The podium was taken by real, brown goat cheese from Stordalen. The experts decided that French cheese also takes second place.

Shocking win

In fact, Fanaost's victory is a pleasant surprise for everyone, especially its creator. The producer describes his cheese as mild, semi-fat and similar to Gouda. Hafslund, as we read in NRK, adds "I cooked some cheese because I think the village of Fana is so beautiful that she could make her own cheese and get rich from it."
