The climate summit, held in Katowice, resulted in new arrangements for reducing exhaust emissions by 2030. European car manufacturers and dealers have signed an official agreement to meet the EU's new climate targets on exhaust emissions.

In the original assumption, the agreement provided for the reduction of exhaust emissions by 40%. Such a document was signed by The European Commission, the European Parliament and The Council of the European Union. Reduction at this level was an initiative in the first place European Parliament and the Council of the European Union. The European Commission initially opted for a cut of 30%. For this reason, the adopted agreement between European car manufacturers and dealers must first of all be accepted by other institutions, as the EC will probably adopt these assumptions.

“Electrics” are to be of great importance

Reason for the adoption new EU climate targets on exhaust emissions with such a drastic reduction is the fact that many manufacturers intend to expand their offer electric cars. In this context, elbile will begin to play a key role in delivering the latest climate assumptions, taken during the last Climate Summit in Katowice.

A challenge for the transport sector

is a challenge primarily for the entire transport sector. According to statistics, almost 2/3 of exhaust fumes are emitted by heavy goods vehicles that carry out transport services for people and goods. Taking into account the specifics of the industry, the aforementioned agreement stipulates that pollution resulting from transport will be 30% lower, not 37,5% as in the case of passenger cars.

What does this mean for Norway?

Establishing new climate assumptions from the Norwegian consumer point of view means a wider range of electric cars and low-emission cars. The changes can be felt over the course the next few years. Automotive market experts predict that the implementation of the climate targets will trigger a rapid increase in the volume of electric vehicle sales throughout Europe.

– “The new EU climate goals regarding exhaust emissions will put pressure on car manufacturers,” he believes Philippe Vangel from the AVERE association - "They will have to expand their car offer much faster, focusing more on electric cars than they have done so far."

In 2030, 1/3 of cars with electric motors

The signed agreements are also positively assessed by Greg Archer from the Transportenvironment.org website: “Thanks new EU climate targets on exhaust emissions will contribute to a faster increase in the share of electric cars in the total number of vehicles. The implementation of the agreements means that by 2030 1/3 of cars in the EU will be powered by electric motors, ”he estimates.

In brief…

  • European manufacturers and sellers have signed an agreement under which the reduction of exhaust emissions will amount to 37,5% by 2030 for passenger cars and 30% for trucks.
  • The European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union originally proposed a 40% reduction in exhaust emissions for the entire transport sector.
  • Thanks to new EU climate targets on exhaust emissions in 2030, 1/3 of cars are to be powered by electric motors.
  • The new regulations will also apply to EEA countries, including Norway.
