From October 1, the requirement to use a reinforced structure at the front of the bus was introduced. Thanks to this, it will be better protected against deformation in the event of a frontal collision. In this way, the driver will also be better protected in frontal collisions.

The new safety requirements follow advice from the National Accident Investigation Commission aimed at improving safety in the event of collisions on buses, and proposals that were the subject of consultations.

- I'm glad that new requirements come into force increased collision protection in buses. This is an important first step in working to better protect bus drivers, says Nygård.

Norway is working towards international standards

The new safety requirements that have now been introduced in Norway go beyond EU regulations and those set by the UN. Norway will continue its efforts to influence the EU and the UN to follow suit.

– The aim is for the reinforced front structure to become an international standard. We have raised this issue with the EU High Level Group on Road Safety and are monitoring the initiative. Among other things, I go to Brussels to take part in the Bus World conference. At this point, I will once again address our wishes for international requirements for a unified international bus industry, both to industry players and to authorities in other countries, says Nygård.
