You are entitled to the compensation allowance in Norway if your working capacity is less than 50%. The purpose of this benefit is to provide support in the event of temporary or partial disability due to illness or injury. However, there are several criteria and formalities that must be met.

Who is entitled to a compensatory supplement in Norway?

The basic criterion is to show that a minimum of 50% of the working capacity has been lost. In such a case, NAV may provide support in the form of employment programs, benefits during treatment, etc. The Office must obtain documentation which will clearly show that the loss of temporary or partial ability to work results from an illness or injury, and the treatment undertaken promises improvement and recovery to the labor market.

The compensation allowance in Norway is granted for a period of temporary or partial incapacity for work, and its primary purpose is to enable you to achieve full fitness. During the unemployment benefit period, you have the right to change or retain your place of employment. It is important to note that you may receive a top-up supplement along with other NAV benefits.

IMPORTANT! If you are still unable to perform your job after the sickness benefit, you must apply for a compensatory supplement after its completion. It is not automatically granted.

Ready for action

For the Office, the basic criterion for granting the compensatory allowance is the demonstration of "readiness to act towards return to work", which is understood as follows:

  • you have a return to work plan prepared or involved in its creation,
  • you are able to meet the NAV requirements,
  • you have provided the necessary documentation to the Office,
  • you implement all the assumptions you have made with your NAV advisor. You also report any difficulties or delays.

These conditions are considered to be met if you do the following:

  • you are under medical treatment,
  • you have your own employment plan,
  • you systematically increase the number of hours worked,
  • you continue to work with NAV after treatment has ended or the establishment plan has been completed.

NAV also provides for the possibility of granting a compensatory supplement if you are just at the stage of preparing a return to work plan or waiting for treatment or for your queue in the employment plan.

Contributions to the Norwegian health system

You must have been a member of the Norwegian health system for at least three years to be eligible for the compensatory supplement. It is important that the NAV takes into account the overall period of membership. Therefore, these three years of payment of health contributions in Norway do not have to be consecutive. Breaks during this time are allowed. People aged 18-67 are also eligible for the benefit, and if you are aged 62-67, you must show that you have earned at least 1G of income.

Compensation allowance in Norway - what you will get

Norway's top-up allowance is 66% of what you have earned in the conversion period. The maximum amount of the benefit cannot exceed 6G. If you received earnings that entitle you to the higher award, NAV will not take into account earnings over six times the basic insurance rate.

In Norway, the compensatory supplement is granted for a period not exceeding three years. NAV, however, allows for the possibility of departing from these rules, if your condition requires a longer period of convalescence and regaining full working capacity. You can submit your application by following this link.

Additions to the employment plan

You are also entitled to benefits if you already have an employment plan. You can apply for the following:

  • books and educational materials,
  • covering the costs of daily travel,
  • covering the removal costs,
  • providing care for children,
  • nursing care for family members,
  • covering additional costs for housing.

Re-applying for an add-on

If at least 52 weeks have passed since the last benefits period and you have not received any benefits for more than 4 years, you can re-apply for a compensatory supplement in Norway - as long as you need such assistance.

In what cases to inform NAV?

You are entitled to a compensatory supplement in Norway provided you meet certain conditions. However, if your life situation has changed, you must inform NAV of this fact. Especially in the following cases:

  • you will find a full-time or part-time job,
  • you will recover fully or only partially,
  • you interrupted the implementation of the employment plan or treatment,
  • you are going on vacation,
  • you are going abroad,
  • you change your address or bank account number,
  • you have been treated by a hospital or other health institution,
  • you intend to travel or move abroad,
  • you have obtained the right to a retirement pension,
  • you are caring for one or more children,
  • there are any other circumstances that may affect your entitlement to compensatory supplement.

You are under an obligation to be in constant contact with NAV. This applies to both informing about changes in your life situation and submitting your current employment status to the Office. It is worth remembering that only the submission of a complete and correctly prepared documentation enables the calculation of the correct amount of the compensatory supplement.
